Free Pattern Friday: Stacked Stripe Ear Warmer!

Happy Free Pattern Friday everyone! It seems as if the cold winter air is finally starting to roll thru New England, which means it's officially busy season for us creators! The days are going by fast, which means the holiday season will be here before we know it. I honestly can't remember the last night I spent without a crochet hook or knitting needle in my hands (which I can't complain either because I love staying busy).

Lately, I've been focused on expanding my knowledge base of different stitches and techniques to use, and trying to add a little bit of variety into my designs. I realized that almost every single project I was creating was made using only fundamental stitches- which is so BORING. There's an endless amount of design possibilities out there when it comes to crochet, and if I'm going to keep things new and exciting for you guys I've gotta really step up my game.

The latest trend amongst my projects is the use of the Camel Stitch. Not only is it extremely easy to create and use, but it also adds just the right amount of detail to any project without being too busy or distracting from the rest of the work.

If you're not familiar with the Camel Stitch, it's essentially just a normal stitch that is worked in the back 3rd loop, which forces the top 2 loops forward to create a chain design on the front of your work. When worked in several rounds, this pattern gives a "stacked" appearance, much like the stacked beanie trend that was going around about a year or so ago.

I've got a couple more design concepts coming up for you guys, but in the meantime enjoy this free pattern for my Stacked Stripe Ear Warmer!

Stacked Stripe Ear Warmer

Materials

1 skein weight 6 yarn (I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in “Moonlight”)

Scissors

Hook

I - 5.5mm

Terms

ch = chain

slst = slip stitch

dc = double crochet

hdc = half-double crochet

Camel Stitch = create stitch in the 3rd loop, directly behind the 2 loops on top that are normally worked. This will force the top 2 loops forward, creating a chain design on the front of the work

F/O = finish off (ch1, cut yarn and pull tail through to create a knot)

Gauge

(Width) 3 dc = ~1”

Ear Warmer Pattern

(Ch2 in each round counts as 1)

  1. Create enough chains to wrap snugly around head (Remember- stitches will stretch slightly so don’t make it too loose!). Create a loop by Joining w/ slst in 1st ch

  2. Ch2 & create 1dc in each stitch. Join w/ slst in 2nd ch.

3 - 7. Ch2, create 1hdc in each stitch using the Camel Stitch technique (created in 3rd loop behind normal 2 loops where stitch is usually made). Join each round with a slst in 2nd ch.

8. Ch2, create 1dc in each stitch. Join w/ slst in 2nd ch, F/O & weave in ends.
