Free Pattern Friday: Valentine's Day Aphrodite Ear Warmer!

Having Valentine's Day brain block on what to get those special ladies in your life? My new Aphrodite Ear Warmer is not only perfect for this time of year (here in New England anyway), but is also simple and quick to make! This pattern also works great for creating some special "Mommy and Me" sets!

The design is very similar to my Silver Bells Winter Beanie , where the "heart" shape is worked in alternating rounds and created using a simple single crochet technique. I'd say each ear warmer takes around 30 - 45 min to make, so relatively no time at all compared to other crochet projects. I was able to complete it during just one of the Olympic events broadcasting this morning!

Important Notes:

The hardest part (which isn't really hard at all) is carrying the "heart" color (or color 2 in the pattern) throughout the round. You want to make sure to keep the strand towards the back of the ear warmer when crocheting around it. The farther back you hold it, the less likely it is to show through the stitches.

It's also not necessary to keep cutting and re-attaching the heart color each round. Instead, just drop the heart color once the round is finished, complete the next sc round in color 1, then simply pick the color back up for the next heart round. This makes it much easier to switch back and forth between rounds (and you don't have to fuss with weaving in all those pesky ends).

I hope you enjoy this pattern and Happy Valentine's Day!

Aphrodite Ear Warmer

1 skein weight 5 yarn in 2 colors (I used Loops & Threads Charisma in “Off White” & “Chocolate Cupcake”)

I - 5.5mm

ch = chain

slst = slip stitch

sc = single crochet

F/O = finish off (ch1, cut yarn and pull tail through to create a knot)

Length: 1 group (4 sc) = 1 ¼ inch

  • To ensure proper sizing, double check circumference (length x2) after completing round 1 & make adjustments to number of chains if necessary

  • When creating the rows with the “heart” design, you will hold color 2 in the back of each stitch and carry it throughout the round by crocheting around it. Once the sc round is complete, drop color 2 (DO NOT CUT!) & create the next sc round with color 1 only. Pick color 2 back up when starting the next heart design round.

  • To create the “heart” design, insert hook in stitch, yarn over w/ color 2 & pull through, then yarn over with color 1 and pull through both loops

Ear Warmer Pattern

  1. (Color 1- Off White) Create chains (in multiples of 4) to wrap snugly around head. Create a circle by joining w/ slst in 1st ch

  2. Ch1 & create 1sc in each stitch. Join w/ slst in ch1

  3. (*Heart Row) Attach Color 2 (Chocolate Cupcake) & ch1 w/ color 1. While carrying color 2 throughout the round, *create 3sc using color 1, insert hook into 4th stitch & yarn over w/ color 2. Pull through stitch, yarn over using color 1 & complete sc. Repeat from * until end of the row (should end w/ color 2). Join w/ slst in ch1 using color 1 & drop color 2 (DO NOT CUT!)

  4. Ch1 using color 1 & create 1sc in each stitch. Join w/ slst in chain

  5. (*Alternating Heart Row) Ch1 w/ color 1 & pick up color 2 from the last heart round (will carry through round). *Create 1sc using color 1, 1 “heart” using color 2 (same steps as above), and 2sc using color 1. Repeat from * until end of row (should end w/ color 1). Join w/ slst in ch1 using color 1 & drop color 2

  6. Ch1 using color 1 & create 1sc in each stitch. Join w/ slst in chain.

  7. Repeat steps 2-5 until desired height. The last round should be color 1 only
