Free Pattern Friday: 5 Braid Ear Warmer!
This is another pattern that looks intimidating at first, but is actually incredibly simple. The band itself is made up of 5 separate double crochet strands that are connected, interwoven, then connected again. he braid itself is a continuation of 4 easy steps that create each "section".
This pattern can also be modified if you would prefer a wider band (the pattern example measures approx. 3 inches across). If you do decide to make a larger band, I recommend creating an additional row of crochets (either half-double crochets or double crochets) in each strand, but you can also try braiding the strands a little more loosely as well.

5 Braid Ear Warmer
Materials
1 skein of weight 6 yarn (I used Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick in “Charcoal”)
Scissors
Hook
N - 9mm
Gauge
3 dc in strand = 1 inch when braided
Terms
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
F/O = finish off (ch1, cut yarn and pull tail through to create a knot)
Notes:
The end width of the band is dependent on how tight the strands are braided & how wide each strand is
If you would like a wider band, you can either braid the strands more loosely, or create an additional row to each strand (ex: 2 rows of hdc/dc instead of 1 row of dc)
Creating the strands
Ch 62 & insert hook into 3rd ch from hook. Create 1dc in each ch (60)
At the end of the row, F/O with short tail
Repeat these steps for 4 more strands (5 in total)
Connecting the strands
Working from right to left, create 2sc on the first horizontal dc post of one of the strands
Hold the next strand to the left & create 2sc on the dc post to connect
Repeat until all 5 strands are connected. F/O

Creating the “5 braid”
2. Cross strand “1” over strand “2” 3. Cross strand “5” over strand “4”
4. Cross strand “5” under strand “3” 5. Cross strand “5” over strand “1”
Repeat steps 2 - 5 until there is approx. 1 inch left of each strand (some strands may be a little longer or shorter- this is okay)
Connecting the ends
Turn the braided band around so the ends are at the top
Repeating the same steps as the other connected end: create 2sc in the horizontal dc post of the far right strand.
Connect the rest of the strands in the exact order as they ended moving from right to left
When last strand is connected, fold the band in half (wrong sides facing out), create 1sc in each stitch across (from right to left) to connect the two edges. F/O & weave tail
